The composer thread

So I’ve listened a lot to the traditional pieces and the variations that different players achieve, but now I want to hear what else is being made when it comes to the shamisen. I want to start this thread for people to show and discuss what they are composing.

I realize this thead won’t have much activity right now as most people here are trying to learn how to play and may not even be interested in making their own music. But I know that this can become a really beneficial thread if it gets going.

So go on and share your music, your thoughts and links on people who are pushing the limits!

Great idea!

Mike Penny is a musical genius, and close friend. He can do no wrong.

'nuf said. I don’t know how he does it. Lol

Kevin, Kyle, and I. Being rediculous, lol
Lady Gaga - Paparazzi, cover.

Okay i just somehow find that music video of Mike Penny somehow disturbing  maybe its too 80’s (or 90’s, or what is it) for me or something…
But no doubt he’s a great performer

Wow Grant you guys are so great at on-the-fly synchronizing  I’m not a big fan of Lady Gaga but I’ve noticed there are many people who manage to make covers really good, and I must say this was nice!

As for Mike Penny the Sou Da Ne songs were actually soothing in some way. I listened to them when trying to wake up early in the morning at work and it put me in a happy mood. I didn’t watch the actual video much though, so maybe I was spared of the disturbing part

Yea i actually liked Sou da ne’s but the Leaving Forever

80s

which by the way reminded me… Why isn’t Mike Penny on these forums yet?

yes . . . I don’t know him but where is he?

(of course I have noticed his uh no yes definitely art

Okay this is weird… I don’t think i liked Leaving forever but it’s going on and on in my head… maybe i subconsciously actually liked it? :o

In Agatsuma we trust!

That’s my favourite Agatsuma album
:stuck_out_tongue:

Because “Leaving Forever” is complete genius. That’s why it’s stuck in your head!

Karl Hedlund! Thanks for this thread! Good idea to give people a chance to hear what is being done in the area of original Shamisen music. I would post some of my original Shamisen music here but the reality is I have written so many original Shamisen compositions that I figure it would be better to just invite you to my youtube channel www.youtube.com/shamikami

Oh I’ve been there Kevin  There’s a lot of good stuff there! I think everyone here that is a member have come across that channel and if not they should visit it.

The reason I haven’t posted anything here yet though is that I already know now that when I get my shamisen it will be 50% training technique and traditional songs, and 50% just playing whatever I feel like and exploring how you can make the shamisen sing. My experience is that that is how you get better without feeling that you are bored or bad at playing.

So when that time comes I want a place to share that with others and get feedback, and I thought someone who’s already in the process of learning might already have something to share.

Penny just doesn’t stop. I love his style here with the multiple video/track recordings.

Does anyone know any metal/rock bands that incorporates the shamisen into their arsenal? I’ve listened to God of Shamisen on Spotify but that is about it. The Yoshida Brothers doesn’t count :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve gotta say, God of Shamisen would be about it other than some independent artists that may not be available. I’ve heard some tracks from Osanai Kaoru that were pretty metal, be he recorded and produced them himself and I don’t think he has a CD.
It might be hard to believe, but Kevin Kmetz really is headlining the whole genre.
