The House Carpenter on Shamisen

Admittedly, I had planned to try playing with Jamie’s piece, but I just found out that our Abbott Family Band music practice got moved back an hour, so only had a short time to churn something out. (Will need to spend more time Jamie’s song)

So here we go! This is one of my favorite old time songs from the 1800s. The House Carpenter!

Oh man! Someday let’s play Shamisen together while simultaneously incorporating vocal harmonies! That would be cool!
Sounds really good Kyle! Singing and playing at the same time is one of life’s moments! Know what I’m sayin!?

Yes we will! Just like Scarborough Fair at the house concert in Sapporo! (Oh yes, I have the footage, it is epic, and will be the feature of a future blogcast  )

Oh dear God! I’m a bit scared to see/hear that!
Did it come out ok? Man! That Sapporo concert was pretty wild!
Good times I tell ya! Good times!

You have nothing to worry about, bro! It came out just fine. Granted, we did crack up on the second verse ('cause we were thinking the same thing), but besides that, it was very smooth!

Hearing that it came out fine has soothed my worries. I don’t have as much experience as you with the good old vocal chords so I was not really sure how that Scarborough Fair thing came out. But now I am anxious to check it out!

cool cool I wish someone would be standing outside the house on this cloudy day and sing and play like that on and off for the whole day I will spend working inside on my snowboarding site (should get online by the end of september for sure) I would bring out coffee, orange juice and prosciutto rolls and some change every once in a while . . . although with that out of sight I’ll do the second best thing keeping this window open and hit play every once in a while . . . sounds great Kyle thanks . . .

Hi Kyle, long time no see - not since our gig up in Mendocino!

Actually, this is the first time I’ve posted on Bachido. It was this rendition of House Carpenter that did it – I absolutely loved it. You have a great voice for folk!

I’ve always liked Joan Baez’s version of the song, but after hearing yours… I really like yours better. I want to hear more!

So put that on the to-do list for Taikai 2014! I’m up for simultaneous singin’ and playin’ (it’s what I do…) We must be able to come up with a bunch of singers in this group!

nice job kyle!

BH: Whoa! With prosciutto rolls, fresh orange juice and coffee for payment, I’d be playing outside your house until your fridge was empty!

Jiro!! Welcome welcome welcome to Bachido!
Yoops, Taichi just came over. Gotta go! will write more later!

Impressive Kyle! I like how you play the strings so frequently. Gonna have to try playing without snapping the skin like that too, to get a faster playing and string swapping.

Hi Jiro! I’m back.
Thanks!! That’s quite a compliment that it finally brought you into the forum! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! Yeah, it went quite nicely. I’m definitely going to be recording more old time folk songs like this! (I was all into these kind of folk songs before getting into shamisen)

Hope to see you soon!

Linda: You’re on!! I know Kevin’s 100% on board as well! Heck, even Karl’s becoming quite the singer! Shall we cover an acapella song on shamisen and an instrumental voice as a choir?

Thanks Liam!

Thanks Karl! I think I kinda got that rhythm from clawhammer banjo. Helps keeping rhythm.

Heck yeah! If you guys have ideas for vocal material start putting 'em up soon so when we meet next year those of us who are not so experienced with vocals (like me) can have time to work out harmonies etc. But yeah! I’m Definately up for more opportunities to practice vocal harmonizing, still a little nervous to hear Kyle and I doing Scarborough Fair though. Even though apparently it was fine!

Oh heck Kyle! Awesome! First time i hear you sing (other than throat singing) and it was great

And i seriously want to hear/see the Scarborough fair by you two ^^
it’s such a great song
