Value of a tsugaru shamisen in your country

I just had a conversation with Andreas about the price of tsugaru shamisen and I tought it would be interesting to make a little survey here to compare.

If you were to buy a tsugaru shamisen at 1500$ USD in your country, how many weeks or months of work would you need (with an average salary) in order to buy one? (please make the calculation as if you had nothing else to spend in a month, no rent or no food to buy)

I think the answer might be surprising here… Can’t wait to get it from you!

2-3 weeks, after tax. The Icelandic króna is quite strong against the dollar right now.

About 3 weeks in France !

Probably 1-2 weeks here in Switzerland. But as you say, without food, commodities, rent. Add those and you’re surely going to go for a whole month of work and more.

After tax, roughly 3 weeks.

In Kenya, it would take an average person about 5-6 months. In a place like Malawi, they’d have to wait a coupe years.

In the US, on what I make now, maybe 2 months for me.

Without food and all that, just a month here in Germany on average salary.

about 9 months

Hi Amanda ! Is 1500 $ the amount of 9 months of the average salary in UK ? Isn’t it a misunderstanding here ?

Not salary, no. I can’t work due to ill health so I get very little income.

What I am trying to get here is a more general portrait by country.
For any individual, there is lots of variations. This is why I am not asking for personal wage but for an average wage.

Any idea about the average salary of someone working in UK ?

Hi there,
Depends on the hours worked, almost everyone I know can only get part time hours so say roughly minimum wage if over 25 is £7.83 from April and most part time hours are about 20 a week so roughly £156 before tax is taken off so approx £624 a month before tax. So maybe 3 months or a tiny bit more depending on tax bracket for lower income working wage.

It’s hard to compare the wage/salary of someone in the US with people from other countries because the amount earned in the US can be wildly different depending on where in the US the person is earning money. For example: the median annual household income in Blackwater, AZ (which I’ve never heard of, despite living in the same state) from '08-'12 was $9,491 USD. In contrast, the average income in '09 for a household in Des Moines, IA was $56,576 USD. It’s a difference of roughly 10 weeks versus 1.5 weeks to earn $1,500. (Sources were Wikipedia and U.S. News)

I am mostly interested to hear about other countries but for the US, I think it could be separated by state instead of all of them. It could make more sense.

Also, the comparison would be better if we go with actual numbers from the last year or maximum 2 years ago.

If I had nothing else to buy(rent, food, other misc expenses) I would need a month to work, probably two if I wanted to add on other stuff.

With me, it would take me probably about 2 years to get enough money to buy one. I currently have my eye on the Sakura shamisen.
