I can only attach one photo due to being new
I received this beautiful shamisen for Xmas. I have no info for it and have no idea of where to start as far as lessons are concerned. It’s second hand. Can anyone tell me what type etc is it and what I should tune it to?
I’ve tried to look it up but all the different types made my head spin.

Hi, thank you for showing this beautiful shamisen. Based on this photo, my best guess that this is a Jiuta shamisen. (or possibly nagauta, but less sure) Definitely is not Tsugaru. Please check this page, and see the difference between the neck and body joint (hatomune) of jiuta and nagauta style shamisen and check with your instrument.

Shamisen are most easily identified by looking at the overall foot print, neck width (just under the head), and body length/width.
