Tour of Team Bachido (FAQ)

Have any questions about joining Team Bachido? You’ve come to the right place! Bachido member Adrian Crovetto has composed a very informative FAQ to answer some important questions we may have.

Tour of Team Bachido: 2014 FAQ

Q: I have special dietary needs. Who can help me with this while we are in Japan?
A: We strongly recommend you let us know of anything such as allergies ASAP so that group outings (that include food) can run smooth. However, we do ask for each member to be responsible for their own dietary needs and eating habits.

Q: I speak little-to-no Japanese. Will there be anyone who can assist me?
A: Fear not; many of the Bachido team members speak/understand Japanese quite well, and will happily help with translation/communication needed along the way.

Q: I do not wish to participate in the taikai performance, but really want to join everyone in Japan. Is that alright?
A: But of course! We would love to have you along for any length of the trip, even if just to make memories and enjoy each others company. However, please do be respectful and understanding of those who will need time to practice.

Q: I am not very skilled at playing shamisen. Is it still acceptable for me to
participate in the taikai performance?

A: Absolutely! We have many team members at varying skill levels; from absolute beginner all the way up to professional, and dare I say, “God of Shamisen” status. Your contribution is happily welcomed!

Q: I do not own a shamisen/do not feel comfortable traveling with my personal shamisen. What options are available for me?
A: Kyle has implemented a great shamisen rental system, and we would be overjoyed to get you set up with the gear you need to rock out with the rest of us. Please let him know ASAP to make sure we have enough gear for everyone.

Q: * What is the best way to get from Tokyo/Narita Airport to Misawa?*
A: This is dependent on when you are flying in to Tokyo in conjunction with when you plan to arrive in Misawa. Regardless, for first-timers to Japan, we highly recommended taking the Shinkansen; it’s a wonderful way to see parts of Japan (even if only from a window). It is also possible to transfer flights from Tokyo to Misawa. However you choose to make your way, please let us know when to be expecting you, as well of whether or not you will need to be retrieved after arriving in Misawa.

Q: What is the best way to get to Sapporo for the Bachido Festival?
A: Considering that we have a couple “days of rest” between the end of the taikai and when festivities start in Sapporo, a proper outline of the “best” way to get there isn’t really possible. What might be good to keep in mind for planning is that as the trip/tour unfolds, many members may make different plans for getting from point A to point B, and how to fill the time between events. Please do feel free to make buddies and organize a party plan however you’d like.

Q: There was no liability waiver last year. Why are we being asked to fill this out?
A: As Team Bachido grows, and more people choose to attend international events, we feel it is our duty to ensure the safety and well being of all members, as well as the safety and well being of the organization. This means that members must be aware of their individual responsibility while participating, both for themselves as well as the team. In the interest of keeping Bachido safe for everyone, we have decided it to be a smart move that we adopt a liability waiver. Your patience and cooperation is very much appreciated.

Take vacation!!

I can also add on the diet and safety part that if it is any comfort I am experienced in detecting and handle low blood sugar for people with diabetes, should anyone have it and worry about people not knowing what to do. My girlfriend has diabetes so I’ve had to take action a number of times. Of course everyone should be aware of the person having diabetes.

Thank you for signing on as a resource, Karl. It’s exciting to have you along for the trip!

No problem. It’s gonna be a blast! Remind me not to say this at the airport…

Is there any theme song this year, say, yay like NInja ri ban ban?!! Cause I have got a bit of time to practice a new simple song.

Haha, maybe you need to add another question “How do I make sure I get on the plane?”

I vote that this years theme song should be Enter the Tyrant by Jamie Low!

I second that!

How much will this all cost?

That’s very dependent on what options one chooses; needing transportation, whether or not one will be staying in a hotel while on the trip, renting a shamisen, when and where one would be getting in to Japan, etc.

For obvious reasons, personal travel fare to and from Japan are not included in an estimate of tour costs. But considering all things, I’d estimate around $1500 on the very low end, if one was to be minimalist, but still wants to eat and have a laugh.

Not counting plane fare, I spent around $3000 last year (counting plane fare, it was about $6000 because I bought my ticket late). That also includes my shinkansen tickets and staying in Tokyo for a bit before and after the tour. This year, I will not be stopping in Tokyo, so no shinkansen (or partying there) for me.

How much did the shinkansen cost? I had ordered a flight to Misawa all together, but then AirFrance changed their schedule and the offer I got would made me change airports in Tokyo so I cancelled the ticket and decided to buy a ticket to Narita only instead. Will take the shinkansen from there but trying to figure out how I can prepare that trip best.

We should have a guide on how to get to Misawa with the shinkansen. Someone?

For general reference check this website for any/all kinds of rail itinerary in Japan: www.hyperdia.com

Misawa isn’t directly on the shinkansen line, so you have to go from Tokyo to Hachinohe city. In yen that will cost about ¥16,000 (one way!) Then take one local train to Misawa and that is only an additional ¥550.

Tokyo—>(Shink:¥16,000)—>Hachinohe—>(Local:¥550)–>Misawa

I really recommend that you pick up a JapanRail Pass.
It is a special pass available only to foreigners entering Japan with short-term status. The cheapest pass is ¥28,300 and is good for only 7 days - but with it you can ride (almost) any train just by showing your pass to the station staff. Of course you can reserve seats on the Shinkansen with it too, but in my area (central Japan) it has some limitations (just a precaution if you plan to do other random sightseeing). You have to arrange your purchase for the Pass before entering Japan however but that site has information about how to do that.

Cool, thanks Josh!

That’s quite nice, it will end up being only 50 bucks more than my original flight plan if going with the ordinary price, and I get to see Japan from the train.

Getting to Sapporo from Misawa will be interesting too.

Thanks for jumping in on that Josh. Your knowledge is appreciate~

Getting to Sapporo from Misawa will be interesting too.

Karl, I’m planning to go straight from Aomori (where we finish the taikai), instead of backtracking to Misawa, because all the train schedules I’ve checked on that site so far all end up going thru that hub. I’ll use the extra day or two to sightsee, since I have never set foot on Hokkaido yet. (I may check flights from Aomori-Sapporo, too, to see if it is any easier/price differential as an alternate to the train.)

If anyone in this forum has previously made the trip to Sapporo from either Aomori or Misawa, it would be great if you could share the best routing - Kevin? Nitta-san? Kyle???

That sounds like a great idea Linda. I wouldn’t mind having someone to travel with considering I can’t speak Japanese

Kevin mentioned to me that flying is probably easier and that you get to live with going under water in total darkness for quite some time if you take the train. But I’m open for suggestions.

Karl, I do speak enough Japanese to keep us out of jail and, more importantly, to get us food and coffee/alcoholic beverages (two things sacred to Bachido :-)) So if you and/or any other Bachido members that are planning to go to Sapporo want to travel together in a “pack” on my schedule, I’m cool with that.

FYI, I just checked Hyperdia and there are a couple of JAL flights per day from Aomori to New Chitose for ¥21,400. That’s probably the way I’m going to go, since a 7-hour train through an undersea tunnel strikes me as an uninteresting ride (unless one takes the night sleeper train). I’m guessing that the 15:00-ish flight on May 5 is the one I’ll aim for.

By the way, there are some AIR passes available for Japan that work kind of like a rail pass for planes (conditions apply, of course). But if anyone’s interested, here’s the one that is for Star Alliance users - http://www.ana.co.jp/wws/us/e/wws_common/fare/special/airpass.html. I’m sure people can look up any others online.

Hi kyle, ohidsshiburidesu:) I wanna join bachido again this year,is there kind of application form?P.S I published second modern songs scorebook including yoshida brothers score such as rising and hykkaryouran,I’ll be sending one for you soon!

Karl, I just looked around online for you, and there are lots of connecting JAL flights to Misawa thru Osaka (NB: flights go from Itami Airport (ITM), not Kansai Int’l (KIX)). Flight is only ~1.5 hours (and if you’re really lucky, Mt. Fuji might be poking thru the clouds as you fly over it on your way north… :-)).

Just another option, in case you want to consider changing your flight…

Toshi-san, there is an Application Package topic on the front page of the Bachido forum. The link to the documents is here - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/btkb8ulspfrwp22/0EjkwXo3Km
